What is the secret to achieving success?

Anova Financial Network’s CEO, Mike Persico, and retired NHL hockey player, Dave Schultz, recently sat down together for a knockout discussion. The two traded stories that ranged from the ice rink to the trading floor, on what it takes to be the best, and how to keep up the momentum and motivation through the difficult seasons.

Dave, nicknamed “The Hammer,” is known as one of hockey’s greatest enforcers and holds the NHL record for most penalty minutes in a single season, at 472. He says the road to success, no matter the career path, is far from easy.

“It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of mistakes and a lot of preparation.”

Mike has faced his own “fight” in his industry and says he brings a competitive spirit to everything he does with Anova.

“In the wireless space, there is so much competition. You constantly have to reinvent yourself because if you don’t, someone else will.”

Anova’s challenge however, has been that it’s constantly learning how to balance the availability that customers need, with the latency that is desired; always staying on the cutting edge of solutions.

“The challenge becomes how do we develop technology that can satisfy the demands of the widest breadth of the marketplace? That comes over time, you start with a building block and you add features. It’s the common axiom, how do you move a mountain? One pebble at a time.”

While hockey faces a different set of competitors and challenges, Dave says the method is similar; one step at a time.

“My key to success, which is really for everyone, is that you have to envision it. If you can see it in your head, you can hold it in your hand.”

Mike agrees and adds that it’s not only the belief in seeing a goal through but also the willingness to risk that your ideas might not always work.

“I think that’s important to remember, with every success there is actually more failure and you can’t be afraid to fail. And that’s important to remember. The people who can push past failure are the ones that will ultimately succeed.”
